Arriving home to Locksley they witness the people of the village being questioned over the theft of flour at which point Robin reveals The Earl of Huntingdon is back to resume control of his lands. Although all Much wants is food and a bath he goes with Robin to visit the old Sheriff of Nottingham to try and find out what has been happening since they were away on crusade but they are denied entry to Knighton Hall. Attending the Council of Nobles in Nottingham the next day Robin is faced with the new Sheriff of Nottingham who instead of listening to his pleas to free the villagers of Locksley condemned to hang for stealing the flour makes it clear Robin will be the one to oversee the hanging. After reading out the sentence and attempting to delay proceedings with the help of a man from Locksley disguised as a cleric Robin has to use his archery skills to save the lives of the four men. After their departure Will Scarlett frees Much and Allan-a-Dale, Robin already having worked his way free, then the group head after the thieves to retrieve their goods. In a reversal of the situation John Little, Roy and others are tied up by Robin but the balance soon swings back when more of John's gang turn up to surround Robin again. Robin is taken to Locksley as they hope to exchange him for a reward but John discovers his wife has just been taken by the Sheriff's men to be next to lose her tongue. Robin assures John if he frees him and provides his bow he can save her in time and his arrows deflect the operation and destroy the instrument of torture. Robin gives himself up to prevent further harm to his people and the Sheriff delights in taunting him with an open prison door knowing he will not leave if it means those who live on the land that was his are at risk. His gang tell him it is probably The Nightwatchman who is a figure that has helped families in the area by delivering food and medicines at night for years. Robin sets out to find the real killer and discovers the Sheriff is using the incident to tarnish the name of Robin Hood. Marian assures Robin it is not The Nightwatchman who is responsible and moves into the castle under the guise of it's added protection in order to find out more. When a further attempt is made on the Sheriff's life he calls on the Master at Arms De Fourtnoy to assist in making Robin's killing spree look even worse and allows Gisborne to double the number of men and dogs he has to hunt down Robin with. Eventually escaping the hunt Robin visits the Sheriff in his chamber under cover of dark to strike a deal with him where Robin and his men will catch the assassin if The Sheriff makes a public appearance where they can be ready for an anticipated attack. Getting into the castle proves easier than getting out and Robin is forced to hide in Marian's chamber as he leaves. The public appearance flushes out the Sheriff's enemy and after mistaking The Nightwatchman as the killer and discovering that the figure is Marian in disguise Robin and Marian surround the real killer (Sheriff's guard Joe Lacey) who makes a last attempt to end Vasey's life only to find he has killed the deputy Sheriff instead. Before they can act Gisborne's men are upon them and Roy is captured. In Nottingham castle the old and new Sheriff are discussing lifting quarantine on a village that has been isolated following disease. Questioning the new prisoner Gisborne is met with the same response each time 'My name is Royston White, I fight for Robin Hood and King Richard'. In the cells Roy learns who the child the men had found belongs to before being taken before the Sheriff and offered the choice to kill Robin Hood or see his mother die. As the outlaws travel to Nottingham to rescue Roy they find him escaping from the castle. Marian is stopped from delivering food to the quarantined village and is hassled by guards until Robin steps in to help deliver the pies. In doing so he is shot and forced to flee into the forest. Just as Roy is about to use the dagger the Sheriff has given him Marian encounters them again and they travel to safety so Robin's wound can be tended. As she returns home she is met by her worried father and taken to Nottingham where the Sheriff makes it clear she cannot be seen to flout the law and embarass him. Her punishment is public humiliation as her hair is cut off in a public display of how the law of the land applies to everyone, serf and noble. The outlaws are encouraged to stay overnight at the safe dwelling as a storm approaches and Roy objects trying to convince them the baby should be returned to it's mother asap. Overnight Roy makes his move but Robin senses the danger and the others spring to his defence. Discovering what the true situation is Robin insists they have two mothers to rescue at Nottingham and they head for the castle. Upon arrival the Sheriff is waiting and they find Roy's mother is no longer in the dungeon but waiting to hang. Having been told of how her son Seth was abandoned in the forest rather than taken to Kirklees Abbey Annie the serving girl takes a knife to Gisborne distracting everyone temporarily. Gisborne soon knocks her down and a fight breaks out until Robin has the Sheriff in the sights of his bow whilst the Sheriff mocks his inability to kill and holds a knife at Roy's throat. The stalemate is broken as Roy breaks free and tells the Robin to run and save his mother sacrificing himself so they can all be free. Marian finds a position where Annie can work and take her baby. LAST LINE: "Sleep." - Allan-A-Dale LAST CHARACTER ON SCREEN: Annie
